左边是“鬲”，商周常用的三足炊器，腿是空心的，好受火；右边是“又”，一只手。饭吃完了，手把鬲撤下去，这就是“彻”的本义：撤除。后来“彻”写作从“彳”从“攴”从“育”，《说文》训“彻，通也”，讲的是小篆已经改换过部件的形体，与甲骨的画面不是一回事。把这个字和同页的“鼎”比一比：鼎的腿多画作实心，鬲的腿鼓而中空，这是两器的分别。

On the left is 鬲, the three-legged cooker of the Shang and Zhou, its legs hollow so the fire can reach up inside them; on the right is 又, a hand. The meal is done and the hand takes the vessel away: that is what 徹 first meant, to clear. The later character is written with 彳, 攴 and 育, and 說文's gloss 徹，通也, “to go right through”, describes that reshaped seal form rather than the picture on the bone. Set it beside 鼎: a 鼎's legs are usually drawn solid, a 鬲's swell and are hollow, and that is how the two vessels are told apart.
