“内”是“入”进了棚子：外框画屋，里面那个倒写的尖角就是“入”。和单写的“入”比一比，多出来的正是外面那圈屋。卜辞里“内”常读作“入”，说的是方国把龟甲、牛羊送进商王那里。《说文》讲“内，入也。从口，自外而入也”，跟字形对得上。

內 is 入 gone indoors: the outer frame is the building and the downward wedge inside it is 入. Set beside plain 入, the addition is exactly that surrounding shelter. On the bones 內 is regularly read as 入, of allied states sending plastrons and cattle in to the Shang king. 說文's “內 is to enter — from 口, coming in from outside” fits the graph.
