“出”由两部分组成：下面是洞口，上面是一个脚尖朝上的“止”。脚尖的方向就是全部的分别——“出”的脚朝外走，“各”的脚朝里进。下面那个洞口，一般认为是商代的半地穴住处，也有学者读作聚落的门口；不论取哪一说，画的都是同一个形体。《说文》讲成“象艸木益滋上出达也”（草木往上长出来），那是汉代人对小篆字形的解释，和甲骨文的脚印无关。
「出」由兩部分組成：下面是洞口，上面是一個腳尖朝上的「止」。腳尖的方向就是全部的分別——「出」的腳朝外走，「各」的腳朝裡進。下面那個洞口，一般認為是商代的半地穴住處，也有學者讀作聚落的門口；不論取哪一說，畫的都是同一個形體。《說文》講成「象艸木益滋上出達也」（草木往上長出來），那是漢代人對小篆字形的解釋，和甲骨文的腳印無關。
出 has two parts: a hollow below and a 止 (footprint) above it with the toes pointing up. The direction of the toes is the whole difference — in 出 the foot walks out, in 各 it comes in. The hollow is generally taken to be a Shang semi-subterranean dwelling, though some read it as the gateway of a settlement; either way it is the same drawn shape. 說文 explains the character as plants pushing up out of the ground, but that is a Han reading of the seal form, not of the oracle-bone footprint.
