“各”和“出”是一对：两个字都由一个脚印加一个洞口组成，分别只在脚尖朝哪边——“出”朝上，走出去；“各”朝下，走进来。卜辞里“各”正是“来到”的意思，商王“各于某地”就是到了某地。今天“各自”的用法是后来借去的，和这幅画没有关系。《说文》说“各，异辞也。从口、夂”，讲的是借来以后的用法。

各 and 出 are a pair: both are a footprint plus a hollow, and the only difference is which way the toes point — up in 出, walking out, down in 各, walking in. In the divination records 各 means exactly “to arrive”: when the king 各s at a place, he has got there. Today's sense “each” is a later borrowing and has nothing to do with the picture. 說文's gloss, “各 is a word of difference, from 口 and 夂”, describes that borrowed use.
