On the left is 交, a person with the legs crossed, the crossing twisted into a small loop — that loop is the surest way to recognise 交. On the right is 攴, a hand holding a short rod; a graph carrying 攴 on the bones is usually saying that something is being done to someone or something. The two together write 效. 說文 glosses it 效，象也, “to take after”. How the divinations actually use the word is still being discussed; what is beyond doubt is the graph itself — a cross-legged figure with a hand and a rod beside it.
