下面是“夂”，一只趾头朝下的脚，表示走回来，这一层清楚。上面那一段各家读法不同：一说是两头都有口的地穴住所，进去和出来走的是同一条路，所以字义是“顺原路回”；一说是鼓风用的橐，上下有口，一拉一送，往复不停；《说文》说“行故道也。从夊，畗省声”，把上部只当声符。三说都承认下面是回来的脚，分歧全在上面这件东西。卜辞里这个字用来记返回，也见于地名。

The lower part is 夂, a foot with its toes turned down, which is coming back; that much is clear. The upper part is read in different ways. One reading takes it for a pit dwelling with an opening at each end, so that you leave and return by the same passage — hence “go back the way you came”. Another takes it for a bellows, open top and bottom, pushed and drawn without end. 說文 says 行故道也。从夊，畗省聲 — “to travel the old road; from 夊, with an abbreviated 畗 for the sound” — treating the upper part as sound only. All three agree about the returning foot; the disagreement is entirely about the thing above it. On the bones the word records a return, and also stands as a place name.
