甲骨文“教”由三部分拼成：交叉的“爻”、小孩“子”，和一只拿着棍子的手“攴”。合起来就是大人拿着教鞭，让孩子照着摆那两根小棍。它和“学”正好是一对：学只有爻和屋子（有时加双手），教则多出孩子和那只拿棍的手。《说文》说“教，上所施下所效也”，讲的是上面做、下面学。

Oracle-bone 教 is built from three parts: the crossed rods 爻, the child 子, and 攴, a hand holding a stick. Together they show an adult with a switch getting a child to lay out the rods. It pairs with 學: 學 has only the rods and the house (sometimes two hands), while 教 adds the child and the hand with the stick. 說文 glosses it “what those above do and those below copy”.
