甲骨文“巫”这个十字形究竟画的是什么，学界至今没有定论。一种说法认为是巫师作法用的两块玉交叉相叠；一种说法认为它和“工”同形，画的是两把矩尺一类的工具交叉；《说文》则说“象人两褎舞形”，把它讲成舞者张开的两只袖子，并说“与工同意”。几种说法各有依据，谁也没有压倒对方，所以这里标为学界有争议。可以确定的是，卜辞里“巫”指的是替商王通神的人。

What the cross of oracle-bone 巫 depicts has never been settled. One account takes it for two jade pieces laid across each other for the rite; another reads it as the same object as 工, a pair of carpenter's squares crossed; 說文 says instead that it “pictures a person's two sleeves in the dance”, and adds that it works like 工. Each account has support and none has won, so the badge here is “disputed”. What is clear is that in the inscriptions 巫 names the person who reached the spirits for the Shang king.
