甲骨文“工”是一件器具的正面图：一横、一竖，下面一个方框。这方框是什么，说法不一：《说文》说“工，巧饰也。象人有规榘也”，多数学者顺着这条路，把它看作工匠用的曲尺（矩）；也有学者认为下面的方块是斧头或夯土工具的头。前一说今天更通行，所以标为较可能。晚期的写法把方框压扁成一条横线，就成了今天的“工”。

Oracle-bone 工 shows a tool head on: a bar, a shaft, and a square block below. What the block is is argued. 說文 says “工 is skilled work; it pictures a person with square and compasses”, and most scholars follow that line and read it as the craftsman's set square; others take the block for the head of an axe or an earth-rammer. The first reading leads today, hence the “probable” badge. In later forms the block flattens into a single bar, which gives today's 工.
