甲骨文“文”和“大”一样，都是一个正面站立的人，分别在胸口：“文”的胸口特意画开一个菱形，里面常加一点、一个弯钩或一个叉。这个记号一般认为是画在身上的花纹，所以“文”本义是纹样，后来才引申出文字、文采。也有写法把胸口留空，只剩一个菱形轮廓。《说文》只看小篆，说“文，错画也，象交文”，讲的是笔画交错，已经看不出人形了。
甲骨文「文」和「大」一樣，都是一個正面站立的人，分別在胸口：「文」的胸口特意畫開一個菱形，裡面常加一點、一個彎鉤或一個叉。這個記號一般認為是畫在身上的花紋，所以「文」本義是紋樣，後來才引申出文字、文采。也有寫法把胸口留空，只剩一個菱形輪廓。《說文》只看小篆，說「文，錯畫也，象交文」，講的是筆畫交錯，已經看不出人形了。
Oracle-bone 文 is the same front-facing standing figure as 大; the difference is the chest. 文 opens the chest into a lozenge and usually sets a dot, a hook or a cross inside it. That mark is generally taken to be a pattern painted or cut on the body, so 文 first meant markings, and only later writing and refinement. Some forms leave the chest empty, keeping only the lozenge outline. 說文, working from the seal form, says “文 is crossed strokes, a picture of interlacing”, by which point the human figure is no longer visible.
