甲骨文“学”多数写法是一个交叉的“爻”摆在屋顶形上面；少数写法在爻的两旁各添一只手。爻是什么，一般认为是摆弄用的算筹或绳结一类东西，也有人说是屋顶交错的木架。不管取哪一说，双手加爻加屋子合起来，都是在屋里跟人学一件本事。《说文》收的是加了“攴”的“斆”，说“斆，觉悟也”，并注明“学”是它的省写。

Most oracle forms of 學 set a crossed sign 爻 on top of a roof shape; a few add a hand on each side of it. What 爻 shows is generally taken to be counting rods or knotted cords handled in learning, though some read it as the crossed timbers of a roof. Either way, hands plus 爻 plus a house add up to learning a skill from someone indoors. 說文 lists the fuller 斆 (with 攴 added), glosses it “to come to understand”, and notes that 學 is its shortened writing.
