字形由“又”（一只手）和一竖组成：长长的一笔是手臂连着中指，旁边两短笔是其余的手指，那一竖就是手里握着的东西。这一竖是木杖还是石斧，学者看法不同；和单写的“又”相比，“父”一定多出这一竖。

The glyph is 又 (a hand) plus one upright stroke: the long stroke is forearm and middle finger, the two short branches are the remaining fingers, and the upright is what the hand holds. Whether it is a staff or a stone axe is argued; what separates 父 from a plain 又 is that the upright is there at all.
