The glyph is symmetrical top to bottom: the locked cuffs in the middle, one long bar threaded through them, and a point flaring outwards at each end. It is generally taken to be the wooden manacle used on Shang prisoners, which is why it sits inside 執 and 圉, the graphs about seizing and confining people. One thing worth being clear about: the manacle graph was originally written 㚔, and the 幸 that means “lucky” is a different character; the two only came to be written alike after the clerical reform, and today both appear as 幸. 說文's gloss 吉而免凶, “good fortune that escapes disaster”, explains that other 幸, not this wooden cuff.
