The shape is unmistakable; what it means has been argued for a long time, and several answers are still in play. One reads it as a ground plan: a square room with an opening let into each of its four sides, like a floor plan drawn from above — which is the sense filed here. 說文 offers two others: “亞 is ugliness; it pictures a person with a hunched back”, and, in the same entry, “賈侍中 says it stands for rank and order.” A fourth reading ignores the picture and looks at where the word sits: on bronzes 亞 often stands in front of a personal name — the 亞巟丁鼎, the 亞屰卣 — so it is taken for a title. Four readings, one cross, and no one has convinced the others.
