外面的方框一般认为是棺，也有人认为是墓坑；里面一竖两横的形体，是四肢屈起的遗体。小篆换成另一种结构，《说文》说“葬，藏也，从死在茻中”，上下四丛草，中间是“死”，甲骨文的写法和它并不相同。

The outer rectangle is generally taken to be a coffin, though some read it as the grave pit; the upright with two bars inside it is the body with the limbs drawn up. The seal script uses a different structure: the Shuowen glosses 葬 as 'to store away' and analyses it as 死 among 茻, four clumps of grass, which is not how the oracle-bone scribes wrote it.
