一边是“歺”：一段剔净的残骨，上端一横，下面连着一个方框；另一边是侧身的人形，向它俯身。两个部件合起来记“死”。《说文》说“死，澌也，人所离也”，分析为“从歺从人”，与甲骨文的结构相合。

One side is 歺, a stripped bone: a short bar at the top and a boxed shape below it. The other side is a figure seen from the side, bowed towards it. The two together write 死. The Shuowen glosses it 'death is the ebbing away, that from which a person departs' and analyses it as 歺 plus 人, which matches the oracle-bone structure.
