一边是侧身的大人，一边是“子”：方框是孩子的头，下面一竖是身子。大人向后伸出一只手臂托住背上的孩子，字义由此引申为“护住、养育”。和“好”相比，“保”的孩子在背后，“好”的孩子在身前。

One side is an adult seen from the side, the other is 子: the box is the child's head and the upright its body. The adult puts an arm back to steady the child, and from there the character comes to mean 'to protect, to keep'. Next to 好, the child of 保 rides behind the adult; the child of 好 is held in front.
