左边是侧身的人形，右下是倒写的“子”：小方框是头，一横是两臂，向上的一竖是腿。孩子头朝下，记的是分娩的一刻；有的写法在旁边加两点，表示随之而下的水。这个字形后来分化出“毓”和“育”两种写法。

At the left is a figure seen from the side; at the lower right is 子 written upside down — the small box is the head, the bar the arms, the upright the legs. The child head-downwards records the moment of birth, and some forms add two dots beside it for the fluid that comes with it. The graph later separated into the two writings 毓 and 育.
