上面两三笔是披散的长发，末端向一边勾起，中间一横是发际，下面才是侧身的人形。头发不剪而任其长，说的是上了年纪的人，所以这个字既表示“长久”，也表示“年长、首领”。有的写法在人形旁多出一竖，一般认为是手杖。《甲骨文编》另把一批同样的长发人形收在“髟”（长头发）字头下，多数学者认为那些形体本来就是“长”，后来才分出专写头发的“髟”。

The two or three strokes at the top are loose long hair with hooked tips, the horizontal bar is the hairline, and only below that comes the figure seen from the side. Hair left uncut belongs to someone of years, which is why the character carries both 'long' and 'senior, chief'. Some forms add an upright beside the figure, generally taken to be a staff. 《甲骨文編》 files a further set of the same long-haired figures under the headword 髟 (long hair); most scholars read those forms as 長 too, with 髟 splitting off later as the character for hair alone.
