字形是“人”加“尹”，这一点没有争议：把握事的那个人写出来。卜辞里它几乎只作名字用——“伊”“伊尹”“伊奭”，商王为他卜问、向他致祭，规格和先王相近，可见他在商人心里地位很高。后世的书说伊尹辅佐成汤灭夏、做过商的宰相，卜辞本身只记下了祭祀他，并没有记下这些事；能从甲骨上直接看到的，是一个非王族的人物长期受到王室的祭祀。这个名字和“尹”这个官称同出一形，可以一起看：卜辞里的名分往往就是职事。《说文》说“伊，殷圣人阿衡，尹治天下者。从人，从尹”，用的正是后世的传说。

The shape is 人 plus 尹, and that is not argued: it writes out the man who has the business in hand. On the bones it works almost only as a name — 伊, 伊尹, 伊奭 — and the king divines about him and offers to him on a footing close to that of the royal ancestors, so he stood high in Shang eyes. Later books say 伊尹 helped Tang bring down the Xia and served as his chief minister; the divinations record the offerings, not the story. What the bones themselves show is a figure from outside the royal line receiving sacrifice from the royal house over a long period. The name and the office 尹 come out of one shape, and they are worth reading together: a standing in these records is usually a job of work. 說文's “伊, the sage of Yin, Ahéng, the 尹 who governed all under heaven; from 人 and 尹” is the later story written into the gloss.
