This is a window let into a wall: the ring is its frame, the timbers are the lattice, and what comes through the gaps is light.

“囧”是一个纯粹的象形字：外面一圈是窗框，骨片上刻成圆的、椭的、带尖的都有，随手就刻；里面几笔是窗棂，交叉的方式一版一样。《说文》说“囧，窗牖丽廔闿明。象形”，“丽廔”说的就是格子透亮的样子，这和骨片上的画完全对得上。后来“囧”很少单用，却留在“明”的古写“朙”里——月光照进窗子，那个窗子就是这个字。
「囧」是一個純粹的象形字：外面一圈是窗框，骨片上刻成圓的、橢的、帶尖的都有，隨手就刻；裡面幾筆是窗櫺，交叉的方式一版一樣。《說文》說「囧，窗牖麗廔闓明。象形」，「麗廔」說的就是格子透亮的樣子，這和骨片上的畫完全對得上。後來「囧」很少單用，卻留在「明」的古寫「朙」裡——月光照進窗子，那個窗子就是這個字。
囧 is pure picture. The ring outside is the window frame — round, oval or pointed as the carver's hand fell — and the strokes inside are the lattice, crossing differently on every piece. 說文 says “囧 is a window, open-worked and letting the light in; it is a picture”, and “open-worked” is exactly what the bone draws. 囧 seldom stands alone later, but it survives inside 朙, the old way of writing 明: moonlight coming in at a window, and this is that window.
