下半是“女”：两臂交叠、屈膝跪坐的人形；上半是竖起的长发，旁边是“又”，也就是一只手。这只手在做什么，有两种读法：一说是为出嫁的女子束发加笄，一说是抢婚旧俗的记录。《说文》按小篆分析为“从女、从屮、从又”，并说“又，持事，妻职也”。字形本身没有争议，可议的是这只手的动作。
下半是「女」：兩臂交疊、屈膝跪坐的人形；上半是豎起的長髮，旁邊是「又」，也就是一隻手。這隻手在做什麼，有兩種讀法：一說是為出嫁的女子束髮加笄，一說是搶婚舊俗的記錄。《說文》按小篆分析為「从女、从屮、从又」，並說「又，持事，妻職也」。字形本身沒有爭議，可議的是這隻手的動作。
The lower half is 女, a figure kneeling with arms folded; the upper half is hair standing on end, with 又, a hand, beside it. What the hand is doing is read two ways: as binding and pinning the hair of a woman being married, or as a record of marriage by capture. The Shuowen, working from the seal form, analyses it as 女 plus 屮 plus 又 and says 'the hand is the one that does the work, which is the wife's office'. The drawing itself is not in question; the gesture is.
