一只放大的眼睛画在人形的头上，下面是“皿”：一个带圈足的盆。人低头看盆里的水，水面就是最早的镜子；后来加“金”写作“鑑”，专指铜镜。《说文》说“监，临下也”，正是俯视的意思。
一隻放大的眼睛畫在人形的頭上，下面是「皿」：一個帶圈足的盆。人低頭看盆裡的水，水面就是最早的鏡子；後來加「金」寫作「鑑」，專指銅鏡。《說文》說「監，臨下也」，正是俯視的意思。
A greatly enlarged eye sits where the figure's head would be, and below stands 皿, a basin on a ring foot. Someone bending over the water in a basin is using the oldest mirror there is; later the character was written 鑑 with 金 added for the bronze mirror. The Shuowen glosses 監 as 'to look down from above', which is exactly the posture.
