上面是“宀”，一座两面坡的屋顶；屋下一边是侧身的人形，一边是一张席子，席面上还画着编织的纹路。人就着席子在屋里过夜，就是“宿”。《说文》把它解作“止也”，从“宀”。有的写法把屋顶省去，只留人和席。

At the top is 宀, a two-sided roof; under it stand a figure seen from the side and a mat with its weave marked on the surface. A person settling on a mat for the night is 宿. The Shuowen glosses it as 'to stop' and takes the roof as the meaning element. Some forms leave the roof out and keep only the person and the mat.
