一边是立起来写的床，就是“爿”：一长竖加两短横，正是床架；另一边是人形，头上的眉毛竖起，眼睛画成一个大轮廓，表示睡着的人眼前仍有影像。《说文》按小篆分析为“从夕，瞢省声”，说的是夜里；甲骨文画出来的却是床。

One side is a bed stood on end — 爿, one long upright with two short rungs, the frame of a bed. The other is a figure whose brow bristles and whose eye is drawn as a large outline: the sleeper still has something before the eyes. The Shuowen, working from the seal form, analyses it as 夕 (night) with a phonetic, but what the oracle-bone scribes drew is the bed.
