一边是侧身的人形，一边是“木”：一竖为干，上面分两枝，下面分两根。人靠着树歇息，就是这个字的本义。《说文》说“休，息止也，从人依木”，和甲骨文的画法一致。和“林”相比，“休”的左边是人不是第二棵树。

One side is a figure seen from the side, the other is 木: an upright trunk with two branches above and two roots below. A person leaning on a tree is resting, and that is the character's original sense. The Shuowen says 'to rest is to stop; a person leaning on a tree', which matches the oracle-bone drawing. Next to 林, what stands at the left of 休 is a person, not a second tree.
