弘 is a bow plus a small mouth. Where that mouth goes is not fixed: some forms tuck it against the right of the waist, some drop it below the bow, and some draw the bow as a long narrow closed outline with the mouth shut inside it. What the mouth is for is argued two ways: as a pointing mark singling out the stretch of string that sounds, or as a phonetic that later hardened into 厶. 說文 takes the first line when it says 弘 is “the sound of a bow”. On the bones the word stands mostly inside personal names; the abstract sense “great, wide” only holds firm from 尚書 and 詩經 onward.
