字形分上下两截：上面两组张开的短画，下面一个口。一般认为那两组短画是左右分开的两面山坡，下面的口就是谷口（李孝定）；《说文》另有一说，把上面讲成水流“只露出一半”的样子——“泉出通川为谷，从水半见，出于口”。和“泉”比一比：“泉”的水是从一个洞口往下淌，“谷”的水是先分岔再汇到口子里。

The graph falls into two halves: two splayed pairs of short strokes above, and a mouth below. The two pairs are generally taken to be the hillsides parting to left and right, with the mouth below as the mouth of the valley (李孝定); 說文 gives a different account, reading the upper part as water showing “only half” of itself — “a spring that issues and runs to a river is 谷; from water half seen, coming out of a mouth”. Compare 泉: there the water runs down out of a single opening, while in 谷 it branches first and gathers into the mouth.
