Everyone reads the foot at the bottom; the thing above it is read in different ways. One reading takes it for a plant pulled up whole — leaves above, the clod of earth still on the roots in the middle — and the foot caught in the tangle. A second takes it for 叀, a spindle whorl, with the foot beneath: tied by its cord and unable to get away. A third takes the upper part for the calyx of a fruit and makes 疐 the ancestor of 蒂. 說文 says 疐，礙不行也。从叀，引而止之也 — “blocked and not going; from 叀, drawn back and so stopped” — which is close to the second.
