三层：顶饰、鼓身、座。鼓身有的画成方块，有的抹成椭圆，中间那一横（或一点）是绷紧的鼓面。顶上的细枝在卜辞各形里从两枝到三枝不等，是鼓顶竖起的羽饰一类东西。《说文》说“壴，陈乐立而上见也”——乐器陈列起来，立着，从上头就看得见，讲的正是这个立着的样子。给“壴”旁边添一只拿槌的手，就成了“鼓”（本库 glyph_drum_001）：没有手的是器，添了手的是敲。

Three tiers: crest, body, stand. The body is squared off in some forms and rounded in others, and the line or dot across it is the stretched head. The fine prongs on top run from two to three across the bone forms; they are the standing ornament, something of the plume kind, fixed at the drum's crown. 說文 glosses 壴 as “instruments set out, standing, so that they show from above”, which is exactly this upright posture. Put a hand with a beater beside 壴 and you get 鼓, which the library holds at glyph_drum_001: without the hand it is the instrument, with the hand it is the striking of it.
