Three things drawn together: rack, stone, hand. The rack is one upright and one arm, like 厂; the slab hangs under the arm, bent at a blunt angle — and that is a chime stone's shape, not round but a thin plate with a bend in it. The beater is written with 殳, the same hand that stands on the right of 鼓 at glyph_drum_001. 說文 reads it exactly: “磬 is the musical stone; from 石, with 殸 picturing the hanging rack, and 殳 the striking of it.” The chime was a real Shang instrument: a stone plate ground thin, drilled, hung on a cord and struck, its pitch set by how thick it was left.
