右边好认：那是“殳”，一根杆加一只手，本库“鼓”（glyph_drum_001）右边用的是同一副写法。左边是争论所在。《说文》说“般，辟也。象舟之旋，从舟，从殳。殳，所以旋也”——把左边当作“舟”，一只手撑篙，船便打转。另一种读法把左边看成“凡”：本章 glyph_raft_001 画的就是这副两柱两档的框，两个字形几乎一样；照这个读法，“般”手里拨的是一只平口的器皿，后来加“皿”写成“盘”，盛水的盘子。骨上这两个偏旁画得太像，光看字形分不出是舟是凡，所以本条只定为“大致可信”。卜辞里“般”多用作人名、地名，也帮不上忙。

The right half is easy: it is 殳, a rod with a hand on it, written the same way as the right half of 鼓 at glyph_drum_001. The left half is where the argument is. 說文 says “般 is to turn aside; it pictures a boat coming round, from 舟 and from 殳, and 殳 is what turns it” — reading the left element as 舟, a boat, swung about by someone poling it. The other reading takes the left element as 凡, the two-post, two-bar frame that this chapter draws at glyph_raft_001; the two graphs are all but identical. On that reading what the hand turns is a flat open vessel, and 皿 was added later to write 盤, the water basin. On the bone the two elements are drawn too much alike for the picture alone to say which it is, so we grade this one only as probable. The bone occurrences are mostly names, which does not settle it either.
