說文 offers two accounts side by side in one entry: “匕 is to set things alongside one another; it is 人 written back to front”, and then “匕 is also what is used to take up cooked grain; another name for it is 柶”. The bone form will carry either. A handle with a small fold at the top is a spoon; turn the whole outline about and it does read as a person seen from the side. The library takes the spoon reading, because that fold at the top is open and would hold something, while the stroke of 人 does not fold. Both accounts stand, so we grade it probable. Note that on the bones this graph mostly does not write a spoon at all: it is borrowed for 妣, the departed ancestresses the Shang king sacrificed to, as in 妣辛 and 妣癸.
