甲骨文“祏”一边是“示”，祭台；一边是一个折角的岩檐，一般认为就是“石”。《说文》说“祏，宗庙主也……从示从石，石亦声”，即宗庙里用石头做的神主。不过右半写得比“石”简，常常不带“石”下面的方框，这个字形的认定主要靠后世的字而不是靠图形本身，所以这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。

Oracle-bone 祏 sets 示, the altar post, beside a bent rock overhang generally taken to be 石, stone. 《說文》 calls 祏 the tablet of the ancestral temple, from 示 and 石, with 石 also giving the sound. The right half, though, is written more sparely than 石 usually is and often lacks the square below the overhang, so the identification rests on the later character rather than on the picture, and it is graded as a probable reading.
