“安”只有两笔画：外面是“宀”，屋顶加两面墙；里面是“女”，一个跪坐的人，交臂在前。这个女子和单写的“女”一模一样，只是缩小了塞进屋里。《说文》说“安，静也。从女在宀下”，讲的正是这两件东西的位置关系：人在屋子底下。要留心的是，字里画的是坐定的姿势，不是睡着的姿势——躺下的屋子另有写法。

安 is made of two pictures only. Outside is 宀, a roof with two walls. Inside is 女, a kneeling person with folded arms — the very same figure as the standalone 女, just shrunk to fit the room. 說文 says “安 is stillness; it is 女 under 宀”, which is exactly the relation the bone draws: a person set down beneath a roof. Note that the posture carved here is a seated one, not a sleeping one; lying down inside a house is written another way.
