甲骨文“豊”下面是一件高脚器皿，上面竖着两串玉，玉上打的结刻成一个个小疙瘩。多数学者认为这就是盛玉奉神的礼器，“禮”字由此而来；也有人把下半看作鼓（壴）而不是器皿。《说文》说“豊，行礼之器也，从豆”，讲的是小篆的样子。下半究竟是器还是鼓仍有讨论，所以这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。

Oracle-bone 豊 sets two strings of jade upright in a vessel on a stem, the knots in the strings cut as little lumps. Most scholars read this as the vessel of jade offered to the spirits, from which the character 禮 grew; others take the lower part to be a drum (壴) rather than a stemmed dish. 《說文》 calls 豊 the implement for performing rites and analyses it from 豆, which describes the small-seal shape. Because the lower half is still argued over, the picture is graded as a probable reading.
