The four hands are not in dispute; what they are lifting is. One reading takes the middle for 凡, a tray or carrying board, so that 興 is four people raising one object together; another takes it for 同, a tube-shaped vessel; a third sees the frame of a litter or a bed. On any reading the act is the same — four hands together — and from it comes the sense “lift, set going”. 說文 says 興，起也。从舁，从同, “興 is to rise; from 舁 and from 同”, and 舁 is exactly those four hands. On the bones the word is mostly about men: whether to raise the host, whether to raise an army.
