甲骨文“旅”是旗（㫃）加两个人（从）：人跟着旗走，就是一队人马。卜辞里“旅”指商王派出的队伍。《说文》说“旅，军之五百人为旅”，那是后世定下的编制数字，甲骨文只画“旗下有人”，并没有说多少人。和它同一家的还有“族”（旗下是箭）和“游”（旗下是孩子）。

Oracle-bone 旅 is the banner 㫃 plus two people 从: people walking behind a standard, that is, a column. In the inscriptions 旅 is a force the king sends out. 說文 says “five hundred men make a 旅”, but that is a later fixed establishment; the oracle graph only draws people under a flag and says nothing about numbers. Its relatives are 族 (arrows under the flag) and 游 (a child under it).
