甲骨文“族”是旗（㫃）加箭（矢）：一面旗子底下聚着箭。古人出兵按旗号编队，同一面旗下的人多是同姓的亲族，所以“族”既指军队的一个单位，也指一支同姓的人。《说文》说“族，矢锋也，束之族族也”，是从“成捆的箭”那一面讲的。同一面旗子底下换成两个人就是“旅”，换成一个孩子就是“游”。

Oracle-bone 族 is the banner 㫃 plus the arrow 矢: arrows gathered under one flag. Troops mustered by standard, and the men under one standard were mostly one lineage, so 族 names both a military unit and a kin group. 說文 approaches it from the arrows — “族 is an arrowhead; bundled, they cluster” . Put two people under the same flag and you get 旅; put a child there and you get 游.
