甲骨文“卫”是在“韦”（城邑加脚）的外面再加“行”，也就是十字路口的两条路。脚绕着城走，路又把城夹在中间，合起来就是在城外巡逻守卫。卜辞里“卫”正用作守卫、戍守。《说文》也说“衞，宿衞也。从韦、帀，从行”。要和“韦”分开，就看左右有没有那两条长路。

Oracle-bone 衛 wraps 韋 — a walled town with feet round it — inside 行, the two roads of a crossroads. Feet circling the town, with roads on either side, add up to patrolling outside the walls, and that is how the inscriptions use it. 說文 agrees: “衞 is standing guard; from 韋 and 帀, with 行.” To keep it apart from 韋, look for the two long roads at the sides.
