甲骨文“韦”是城邑外面加脚。这两只脚怎么读，学界有两种意见：多数学者认为脚是绕着城走，所以“韦”就是“围”的本字，卜辞里正用作包围、戍守；《说文》则说“韦，相背也”，把一上一下方向相反的两只脚讲成彼此背离，那是“违”的意思。前一说今天更通行，所以标为较可能。至于“韦”后来指熟皮子，那是借音用字，和字形没有关系。

Oracle-bone 韋 sets feet outside a walled town. How to read the feet is argued two ways: most scholars take them as walking around the town, making 韋 the original writing of 圍 “encircle”, which is how the inscriptions use it; 說文 instead says “韋 means back to back”, reading the two opposed feet as turning away from each other — the sense of 違. The first reading leads today, hence the “probable” badge. The later use of 韋 for tanned leather is a sound loan and has nothing to do with the picture.
