This character is a small picture of an action, with nothing left out: mortar, pestle, two hands. 說文 says “舂 is to pound grain; from 廾, holding a pestle over a mortar; 午 is 杵 abbreviated” — 廾 being the pair of hands — and for once the Han analysis matches the oracle picture exactly. The mortar is cut sometimes round-bottomed, sometimes flat with upright walls; the grains inside run from two to none at all. The character is rare on the bones: 甲骨文編 gathers only four copies, and two of those come from the same piece (合26898). So it records something that was done; how often the Shang pounded grain, and in what kind of mortar, the character cannot say — that is a question for the stone mortars and wooden pestles dug up at Yinxu.
