甲骨文“奠”上面是“酉”，一件带盖的酒坛；下面一横，是放酒坛的地面或矮几。《说文》说“奠，置祭也。从酋，酋，酒也。下其丌也”，和这个字形对得上：把酒放下来献给神，就叫奠。和“尊”比一比：“尊”是两只手把酒坛捧起来，“奠”是把它放下去。

Oracle-bone 奠 puts 酉, a lidded wine jar, above a single bar — the ground or the low stand the jar rests on. 《說文》 glosses 奠 as the offering that is set in place, from 酋 (wine) with the stand beneath, which fits this picture exactly. Set it beside 尊: there two hands lift the jar up, here it is put down.
