甲骨文“龠”上面是两根并排的竹管，管口开着；中间那个梭形就是把它们捆起来的绳索。《说文》说“龠，乐之竹管，三孔，以和众声也”，讲的正是这种排管乐器。和“册”比一比：“册”捆的是长短不齐的竹简，“龠”捆的是上端开口的管子。

Oracle-bone 龠 sets two pipes side by side with their mouths cut open at the top, and the lens shape across the middle is the cord that binds them. 《說文》 calls 龠 the bamboo pipes of music, three-holed, that bring many voices into tune. Set it beside 冊: what 冊 binds is writing slips of uneven length, what 龠 binds is tubes open at the top.
