隹 is the short-tailed bird met earlier in the library; add a 口 and it becomes 唯. 說文 says “唯 is an answer given; it follows 口 with 隹 as the sound” — the single “yes” of a reply, the mouth making the sound and the bird marking it. On the bones the mouth is often dropped and the word is simply written 隹; the two spellings are one word. Where it stands in a charge matters: whatever the question is really about, 唯 goes in front of it. 唯王往 asks whether it is the king who goes, 唯今日雨 whether it is today that the rain comes. The Shang often put the same matter both ways and cut the two versions on opposite sides of the shell, one asking 唯 and the other 不唯 — a paired charge, 對貞. Whether 唯 lifts the following word for emphasis or works as the later copula “is” is not agreed among grammarians, so leave that question open when you read.
