全字分三层：上面是张开的手指和散着的头发，中间一竖是身子，下面折两道是跪着的腿。这三层历来没有异议，难讲的是举手在做什么。一说是跪着梳理头发，头发理顺了，所以引出“顺”的意思；一说举手过顶本身就是顺从的姿势，跪着举手就是应了、认了。两说都落在“顺”上，卜辞里的用法也只是这一个：“若”是答应，“不若”是不答应，商王问出行、问年成、问用兵，末了常常就问这一个字。《说文》说“若，择菜也。从艸、右”，那是照小篆的形状讲的——小篆上面已经写成草头，下面成了“右”，跪着的人早看不见了。

The character has three tiers: spread fingers and loose hair at the top, an upright body in the middle, and legs folded twice at the foot. Nobody disputes those three. What the raised hands are doing is read two ways: one reading has the kneeling figure combing the hair straight, and straightened hair gives the sense “smooth, compliant”; the other takes hands lifted above the head as the posture of submission itself, so that to kneel and raise them is to assent. Both land on the same sense, and the bones use the word in only that one way — 若 is assent given, 不若 assent withheld, and it is what a divination about a journey, a harvest or a campaign often asks last. 說文 says “若 is picking greens; it follows 艸 and 右”, which describes the seal shape: by then the top had become the grass radical and the bottom had become 右, and the kneeling person was no longer visible.
