What this graph draws is still open. One reading makes it a simple shelter — peak, beam and post — the thing still standing inside 舍. Another makes it a hafted farm tool, the blade on top and the handle with a foot-bar below. Others will say no more than that it is some propped-up object. The shape cannot settle it, so the badge here says disputed. What is settled is the use: 余 is a first-person word, and in the charge the Shang king says 余 of himself — 余其… , “I shall…”. The word is borrowed for its sound; the thing drawn has nothing to do with “I”. 說文 calls it “a word of easing”, taken as a particle with 舍 for its sound — a Han account of the seal shape.
