A foot stands beside or below. Someone is coming toward you, and you turn about and go to meet them.

The middle of 逆 is 屰, which is simply 大 — a person standing face-on with arms and legs spread — turned upside down: legs above, head below. Someone walking toward you is, from where you stand, the wrong way up, and the inverted figure is how the carvers wrote “coming head-on”. A 彳, half of the crossroads sign, is set at the side, or a 止, a foot, below, to put the meeting on the road. On the bones 逆 is going out to meet — an envoy on his way in, or a force on its way against you. 說文 glosses it 逆,迎也, “逆 is to meet”, and adds that east of the pass they said 逆 and west of it 迎 for the same act.
