三样东西：一只簸箕、两只手、几点碎屑。合起来是把扫拢的东西端出去倒掉。要紧的是不要把今天的“粪”字读回商代去：甲骨上这个字讲的是清除，不是给地上肥。《说文》说“糞，棄除也。从廾推 糞釆也”，也只说清除；至于那几点是什么，《说文》引官溥的话说“似米而非米者，矢字”，就是说看着像米粒，其实是屎——可见这个疑问从汉代就在了。用粪肥田这层意思，要到战国以后的书里才读得到，商代的田里施不施肥，字形说不了，得看土壤和作物遗存怎么说。小學堂的金文库里没有收这个字，所以金文一格是照本条的甲骨主形画的，并不据某件铜器。

Three things: a basket, two hands, a few specks. Together, carrying the sweepings out to be thrown away. The thing not to do is read today's 糞 back into the Shang: on the bones the word is about clearing away, not about putting muck on a field. 說文 glosses it only as “to clear away and discard”, and on the specks it quotes Guan Pu: “they look like 米 but are not; they are the character 矢” — that is, droppings. So the question of what the specks are is at least as old as the Han. The sense of manuring a field is not readable before Warring States texts, and whether Shang fields were manured is not something the character can settle; that question belongs to soil and to plant remains. The 小學堂 bronze database holds no form for this character, so the bronze panel here is drawn after this entry's own oracle primary and follows no particular vessel.
