What can be seen is a tree or a plant in tiers of branches, denser than 木 and fuller than 生. What it is has two readings. 說文 says “丰 is grass growing thick and thick again; from 生, reaching top to bottom”, which attends only to the foliage. The other reading takes it for the earliest form of 封: the swollen foot is a root lifted with its soil, and a tree set with its earth on a raised mound is how a boundary was marked — the oracle-bone 封 is exactly this shape with 土 added. Both the swollen-footed form and the plain form occur, and the divinations do not separate them, so the badge stays at probable. It should be said plainly that on the bones this character is used mostly as a personal or place name; no divination uses it of how a crop is coming on.
